The Grandma’s Quilts exhibit currently on view at the Osceola County Historical Society Museum has been extended through January 31. The exhibit displays vintage quilts and coverlets from the Society’s permanent collection, dating from the late 1700s to circa 1950, and contains related articles and accessories, including three vintage sewing machines made by Singer and rival company, White.
Quilting is an art and skill that was brought to America by the first settlers. Not only an art form used for both utility and decorative purposes, it has held social significance through the centuries, bringing women together to socialize during activities such as quilting bees; used to signify personal milestones and memorials, political commentary; and even used to harbor cryptic messages and instruction.
The OCHS Museum is on the grounds of the Pioneer Village at 750 N. Bass Road (just off Hwy 192) in Kissimmee, and is included with village admission: $5.00, adults, $2.00, children 12 and under. Visiting hours are Thursdays through Sundays, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For more information, call 407-396-8644.
